Stripe is a high-value target because it holds real money. Unlike a gaming account or social profile, a financial account breach can result in direct monetary loss that may be difficult or impossible to recover. Attackers prioritise finance accounts precisely because the payoff is immediate.

For any financial account, we recommend a minimum of 16 characters with full character variety. If Stripe supports longer passwords, use 20 or more. The extra length is meaningless effort for you (your password manager types it) but dramatically increases attack resistance.

For accounts you access via a password manager — use a long random string. For accounts you occasionally need to type manually, a 5-6 word passphrase gives similar security with better memorability. Either way, never reuse a password you've used elsewhere.

We'd say yes — treat it as mandatory even if Stripe makes it optional. Use an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy, or a hardware key like YubiKey) rather than SMS if possible. SMS 2FA can be bypassed via SIM-swapping attacks, which specifically target financial accounts.

Modern security guidance (NIST 800-63) advises against scheduled password rotation — it encourages weaker passwords as people start using predictable patterns. Change your Stripe password only if: you suspect compromise, you've reused it elsewhere and that site was breached, or you've shared it with someone.
