Unlike a bank, most crypto platforms offer no deposit insurance and have limited or no ability to reverse transactions. If an attacker gains access to your Kraken account and moves funds, those funds are typically gone permanently. There is no equivalent of calling your bank to dispute a transfer.

For any crypto account, use the longest password the platform supports, with a minimum of 16 characters of full character variety. We recommend 20+ characters for exchange accounts, and consider using a different password from your email and authenticator app — if all three are the same, one breach exposes everything.

2FA is essential, but not sufficient on its own. Use an authenticator app (not SMS — SIM-swap attacks specifically target crypto holders). Additionally: use a unique strong password, never access your account on public Wi-Fi, consider a hardware security key (YubiKey) for large holdings, and be vigilant about phishing — most crypto account takeovers start with a fake email or website.

Your Kraken account password protects your exchange login. Your wallet seed phrase (if applicable) is a completely separate master key that controls the underlying blockchain assets. Never store both in the same place. A strong exchange password protects your account access; your seed phrase protects the assets themselves.

Use a dedicated password manager (Bitwarden, 1Password, or KeePass offline). Avoid storing crypto credentials in your browser's built-in password manager — it's more exposed to malware and browser exploits. For very large holdings, consider an offline (air-gapped) password manager or a hardware wallet that removes exchange exposure entirely.

The top vectors are: (1) phishing — fake login pages that steal credentials; (2) credential stuffing — attackers trying email/password pairs from other breaches; (3) SIM swapping — taking over your phone number to defeat SMS 2FA; (4) malware/keyloggers on your device. A unique strong password plus an authenticator app defeats vectors 1 and 2. For 3, switch to app-based or hardware 2FA. For 4, keep your OS and antivirus updated.
